Science and Knowledge in Colonial Latin America

This course surveys themes and scholarship on the history of medicine, astronomy, geography, climate, and botany in colonial Latin America. It introduces students to central questions in the history of science–what do we identify as evidence, accuracy, and expertise in the Early Modern period, and how do we assess it? And how do these questions shift when the creation and practices of science are enmeshed with economies and cultures developed through overseas expansion, settler colonialism, and slavery?
